  1. Brief  History about the Department

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology was established as a dental specialty from the time of starting of Madras Dental College in the year 1980, after it separated from Madras Medical College as a Dental Wing. The institution was later renamed as Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital.

Post graduate program was started in the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology in the year 1984 under the guidance of late Prof. Dr. N. Gnanasundaram. The PG course was started with an intake two postgraduates per year. Extensive research on dental fluorosis was carried out in the department during his period. Numerous dental camps were conducted in rural areas and for school children during his period, before the Department of Public Health Dentistry was started as a separate specialty in our institution.   Currently the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is functioning with two professors, three associate professors, five assistant professors and the intake of postgraduates was increased to five seats per year from the academic year 2013-14 which was the result of steadfast  efforts of the former principal, Prof. Dr. K. S. G. A. Nasser. This department holds the pride of being one of the pioneer government institution to install CBCT in the year 2012. Currently extensive research activities are being conducted on oral malignancies, potentially malignant disorders, TMJ disorders and forensic odontology.

5.         Patient services offered in the department

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is the branch of dentistry which is involved in the diagnosis and medical treatment of diseases and disorders that affect the teeth, its supporting structures, various oral and para-oral structures. It is also involved in the diagnosis and medical management of medically compromised patients, oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It also deals with the effects of oral health on systemic health. This specialty being a dual specialty, also deals with the diagnosis of various dental and oral and maxillofacial diseases and disorders using various imaging modalities such as radiographs including orthopantomography, advanced imaging modalities like CBCT,CT and MRI. The department is involved in imparting training to the undergraduate and post-graduate dental students on the above aspects and also imparts training to the undergraduate medical students and post-graduate students from Forensic Medicine regarding Oral Medicine and Forensic dentistry respectively.

 Our clinical services primarily encompass the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of patients who present with lesions of the oral mucosa, lesions of the oral cavity that may be malignant or potentially malignant, oral manifestations of autoimmune disorders, disorders of the temporomandibular joint, orofacial pain and neurological disorders. Our services include chairside investigations for urgent problems such as suspected malignant lesions, hematologic workup and soft tissue biopsy, oral health education, and tobacco user preventive treatment.

 Our specialty provides modern imaging modalities and treatment of dental and maxillofacial diseases. The various therapeutic modalities provided includes ultrasound therapy, TENS therapy, Low Level Laser Therapy, Photodynamic therapy etc.

Extensive research work is also being carried out in the field of forensic odontology. Several medical specialities, including medicine, surgery, oncology, dermatology and ophthalmology refer patients to the department of Oral medicine and Radiology to rule out oral focal sepsis. The department also handles age estimation for medico legal cases and Sports Authority of India. To summarise Oral medicine and Radiology is a dental speciality that focuses on the diagnosis and management of various dental/ oral and maxillofacial pathoses and also dental management of medically compromised patients and oral manifestations of systemic diseases employing the most effective ways to manage them medically while also improving the quality of life of patients.
