ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT
- IV BDS students – Lecture classes per week – two
Friday – 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Saturday -12.00pm – 1.00pm
Clinical training – Daily OP – 07.30am – 12.00pm - Final Year BDS Students are trained in Public Health, Dental Public Health, Epidemiology, Behavioural Sciences, Preventive Dentistry, SurveyMethodds&Research Methodology including Biostatistics.
- CRI’S have to conduct surveys, make models, charts and attend to Outreach Programmes. They are regularly posted to Camps and field visits both for oral health education and treatment.All students are encouraged to present papers, attend conferences and seminars whenever possible.
- Post graduate training as per norms.- Seminars : Monday & Wednesday
- Journal Club: Saturday
- Ph.D training as per norms
- Dental Hygienists from same college posted in OP for 15 days and theory classes one per week.
Timings : Clinical Postings – 7.30 a.m – 12.00 p.m
Theory Class – 2.00 p.m- 3.00 p.m ( Every Tuesday) - Tobacco Cessation : This Institution was the first Tobacco free Dental Institutionin the year 2008. The Tobacco Cessation Clinic – First Government Dental College in the country.
- The CRI’s are posted at the General Medicine OP, Oral medicine OP, Emergency and Causality Duty and Sunday Duty.

TOBACCO CESSATION COUNSELLINGCENTRE (TCC)
TCC activities were initiated way back in 2008 & was the first Government Institution to do so & declared tobacco free. CRI’s are trained for tobacco cessation counseling and all the tobacco users reporting at the Out Patient Department of the Tamilnadu Government Dental College and Hospital are referred to the Department of Public Health Dentistry for undergoing tobacco cessation counseling. BehaviourCounselling, NRT &Cotenine tests are done. Vareniclinetartarate is administered for those current tobacco users who find it difficult to quit by II session.
FIELD WORK:
- Conducting screening & treatment camps: As required.
- In the rural services, Community Health Monitoring Programmes and services which include Preventive, Diagnostic and corrective procedure.
- To create educational awareness about dental hygiene and diseases
- Conduction of Oral Health Education Programe at –
(a) School Setting
(b) Community Setting
(c) Adult Education Programme - Compulsory setup of satellite clinics in remote areas
- Lectures to create awareness and education in the public forums about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the predisposition to oral cancer –
